Living communally means you generally have a very sociable life. This weekend, the mooring was the venue for a By-Pass, Erehwon Camp, reunion. Over 20 years ago now, these lovely people, gave up part of their lives to protect a beautiful rural area from being wrecked by road building.
Many people would refer to the activists as tree-huggers because they lived in the trees in order to protect them, but in reality, they were looking at a much bigger picture. It was about protesting against roads, more roads = more cars = more concrete =more pollution = climate change. We had a super night sat round a smokey camp fire, whilst some of the visitors played guitar and sang protest songs of the time. I feel greatful and in awe of what these, then young people, sacrificed to help save the planet. twenty years ago it was about the roads and runways. Now its fracking and still runways. Long live the activists. If you are interested in learning more about the Newbury By Pass Demonstration, I highly recommend this book.
